Annie was a cute blonde 29-year-old from up North; I found her on Match.com.
I didn’t read her profile. But from her photos, I could see she had a half-black kid. Now, I’d dated women with children before – so this didn’t bother me.
We traded a few emails and I quickly pitched the first date. We agreed to meet at a lounge downtown later that week.
I added her on Facebook so I could check her out pre-date.
But after stalking her profile for a while, I got a sinking feeling. I suspected she might be fat.
Sure, she looked good in most of her older, full-body pics. But all the recent ones were head shots only.
That was a red flag…
But I went ahead with the date anyway.
I wasn’t totally sure about her weight, honestly. And I figured it’d be good practice, which I needed, since I’d only recently started dating again.
I called her a few days before our date, and we had a nice phone 20-minute phone conversation. She was pleasant and easy to talk to. And I dug her Northern accent.
Maybe, it would turn out OK.
The day came, and I decided to dress up. I went whole-hog – charcoal grey suit, tie, and a pocket square. I felt good.
Annie was texting me as I walked into the bar. She was there already, waiting for me.
The lounge was sprawling, with multiple rooms, three bars, and a restaurant. So it took me a few minutes to find her.
Finally, I saw her sitting alone at the bar, wearing wearing a blue and yellow sundress and heels.
I was completely over-dressed.
No hug and no handshake.
I said hello instead, sat next to her on a bar stool, and ordered myself a glass of white wine (which I hate.)
She was short and feminine; with clear, pale white skin, pretty blue eyes, and long, straight blonde hair. I noticed her nicely painted fingernails matched her toes. And she was also about 20 pounds overweight.
Ambushed by a secret internet fattie.
But I was already there, so I decided to stay.
Annie was sweet and reserved at first. Very Minnesota nice. Despite her weight, she was actually kinda attractive and lots of fun to talk to. I enjoyed listening to her cute accent; she reminded me of one of my exes back in college.
We talked about her career, travel and movies. Then relationships, dating, and sex, because I was curious about her baby. She’d gotten pregnant several years back after dating her ‘baby daddy’ for just a few weeks. She’d known he was the wrong guy – but she’d fucked him anyway.
I continued asking questions – but didn’t talk much about myself. I touched her tons during the date. Again, just for practice.
After ninety minutes I paid for our wine. We shared a goodbye hug, then went our separate ways.
I didn’t call or text Annie after that – I never saw her again.
Although I liked a few things about her, her weight was deal-breaker.
Should I have gone on this date?
And I should have walked out as soon as I saw her, instead of wasting my time.
But it wasn’t a total loss.
I gained valuable first-date experience. And I vowed to not make the same mistakes again.
And though I didn’t know it at the time; Annie was just the beginning of my upcoming dating rampage…
Total Cost: $23 (first date)
Total time Spent: 90 minutes (first date)
Lessons Learned: Women without full-body pictures in their online dating profiles are likely fat.
