(Check Out Part I – Should You Try Magic Mushrooms?)
Last week I explained why people should try magic mushrooms (psilocybin).
Today I’ll show you how to take your first mushroom trip.
This article is for the first timer – someone who’s never done mushrooms before.
But it’s useful for anyone wanting to get the most out of their next psychedelic experience.
So, let’s begin!
Where should you get mushrooms?
That, my friend, is up to you. Getting them is beyond scope of this post. If you ask around, you’ll find someone who knows someone.
Remember, never eat wild mushrooms! They could kill you! Instead, get ‘shrooms from someone who’s taken them before. Someone you trust, who has experience.
How much should you take?
I’d recommend taking 3.5 grams of mushrooms your first time.
All at once.
Yes that’s a lot. But it’ll guarantee an effective dose.
And that amount won’t hurt you (though it may make you vomit).
The only exceptions?
A large person (250+ pounds) could take a little more.
A small person (<150 pounds) should take a bit less.
Preparing for your first mushroom trip
You’ve got your ‘shrooms. You know how much to take.
Well, you must have two very important things sorted out.
BEFORE you take your them:
Mindset and Location.
Because both will have huge impact on your trip! And both are easy to control.
A proper mindset is key to a good magic mushroom experience. You must go into this feeling positive and happy.
So convince yourself that your trip will be great for you. That it will expand your mind. And that it’ll help you see yourself AND the world in a fresh new way.
Can’t do that?
Feel scared, anxious, or negative about it?
Don’t do them at all!
‘Shrooms aren’t going anywhere. Save them for another day, when you do feel ready for them.
Remember, there are no bad trips. Only unpleasant experiences. And those will almost always be due to either bad location or poor mindset. Not drug itself.
Trips always have value, but it’s up to you to find it.
Where should you trip? Indoors or outdoors?
Both places can be great, if you choose wisely:
Tripping outdoors, in a wild place, is ideal.
In the wild you’ll experience the full force of the trip.
‘Shrooms and nature are a damn good mix!
Tripping outside isn’t always safe. There could be bad weather, dangerous terrain, nasty bugs, or man-eating animals.
And even though that stuff is scary?
Sober humans are actually your biggest threat when tripping outdoors! Park Rangers, Police, security guards, parents, or snitches. They will destroy your vibe and disrupt your trip. You MUST avoid them all!
So use judgement if you’re gonna do ‘shrooms outside or in public.
Remember, it’s hard to hide a mushroom trip. People WILL know you’re on drugs when you’re on them.
So if you’re in public, make sure you’re in a place where you won’t have to explain yourself.
Or better yet – pick a place where you won’t run into sober people at all!
Tripping indoors isn’t as fun as doing it outside.
But inside does have a few advantages.
For one thing, you’re safer there. You won’t have to deal with un-wanted company. You’re less exposed to the chaos of the elements. You can control the ambiance, adjusting the lighting or music. You’ll also have access to a bathroom, which is handy.
But if you’re gonna trip indoors?
It’s best to have a big place. Because ‘shrooms and small spaces are not a good mix! ‘Shrooms make you want to move around. You’ll go nuts if you do them in a confined area, so avoid it.
The ideal solution?
A joint indoor-outdoor space.
For example, a big house in the suburbs, with a large private backyard. Or a ranch out in the country with lots of land. That way you can have the adventure of tripping outdoors. But you’ll also have a safe indoor sanctuary to go back to.
And if you’re at a house with land? You’re on private property. So you’re much safer than if you’re out in public.
And all that makes the indoor-outdoor combo great for a ‘shroom virgin.
Who should you trip with?
This is a vital question – even more important than location or mindset.
Who you’re with will have a huge impact on your trip!
Choose wisely, my friend…
Never Trip Alone!
Solo trips are horrible.
I know from experience – you will NOT enjoy mushrooms if you do them by yourself! Tripping alone will make you go (temporarily) crazy. And not in a good way.
So avoid tripping by yourself, at all costs.
Always trip with others.
Bring A Friend
It’s best to trip in small groups.
With three or four close friends.
Pair are good too. Like you and your best bro. Or you and your girlfriend.
Of course, I’m an introvert.
So that affects my preference.
If you’re extroverted, you may want to trip in a larger group. But I think that’s a distraction. Small groups are best if introspection and growth are your goals.
Oh, and remember this:
Even in a small group, you’re gonna want some alone time on ‘shrooms, too. So make sure you have private space so you can ‘get away’ for a while when you’re tripping.
Chaperones are optional when you’re tripping. I’ve never used one.
But with that said, they’re not a bad idea.
For max safety, have a sober chaperone around while you trip. A trusted friend who checks on you from time to time, watching over you to make sure things are OK. But who also doesn’t linger too much when you’re tripping.
If you plan carefully you won’t need a chaperone.
But if you don’t trust yourself?
Get one and remove all doubt.
You’ll need to prepare the area where you’re going to trip.
Here’s what you should do:
If you’re tripping outside, you won’t need to clean much. Maybe just tidy up your camping area.
But if you’re tripping inside?
Take time to prepare your area, first. That means cleaning the place up, removing clutter, making sure there’s no filth.
Because a clean, well-ordered space is much more pleasant to trip in.
Like I mentioned in the last post, ‘shrooms tend to make people vomit. This will only happen once during your trip, usually about half way through. And it doesn’t happen to everyone.
But if it happens to you?
Don’t fight it. If you’re tripping indoors, just make sure you a have a bucket handy or a bathroom close by. Once you get it out, you’ll feel just fine.
Food & Water
Make sure you’re well-hydrated before your experience, since you’ll likely be puking.
Except for water, you probably won’t want to eat or drink during the depths of your trip. But later on, as things mellow out, you may get hungry. And you likely won’t be in any condition to leave your location!
So make sure you have pre-prepared food and drink ready.
If you’re tripping indoors, you have total control over your environment.
So make it as pleasant as possible. Turn off electronics. Set up some mood lighting. Christmas light strings, candles, or just dim the lights. Burn incense. Draw your shades.
You get the idea.
Make a nice little sanctuary for yourself, so you feel comfortable, happy, and ready.
Music isn’t necessary for a good trip, but it’s really nice to have.
It helps set the vibe and can ‘guide you’ during your trip – it’ll stimulate and activate your brain.
So plan your playlist out beforehand. Research music that goes well with shrooms, if you need ideas.
But in the end, it’s best to pick music that you like – tunes that will make you feel good while you’re tripping.
If you don’t have pets, skip this section.
But if you do?
You’ll need to plan for them.
Because in my experience, pets and ‘shrooms don’t mix! Mushrooms seem to terrify them! Dogs will cower, cats will ghost out.
So if you have a pet, put them somewhere safe and then stay away until you’re sober again.
[Editor’s Note: I did more research after publishing this. It looks like not ALL pets fear people tripping on ‘shrooms. Dogs seem to be more tolerant than cats. Reaction will depend on pet personality and how close they are with their owner].
Shrooms taste horrible. You’ll literally have to choke them down.
So it’s best to mask the flavor.
Mix them with sweet food when you eat them.
My personal favorites?
Chocolate and peanut butter. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Reeses Pieces are very good choices. But any kind of candy will work.
How long will ‘shrooms last?
They last a long time. Like all day.
12-18 hours later, you’ll still be feeling them, depending on dosage.
So if you’re gonna do them, make sure you have enough time set aside.
Ideally, you’d have at least one full day for your first mushroom trip. Two days are better though.
Yes you’ll be sober on day two. But you may feel lethargic and need time to recuperate.
What will happen to me?
First time on ‘shrooms?
Prepare to have your mind blown.
