We locked eyes as she looked out the window towards me. I knew I must approach her.
So I boarded the train.
But it was so full of Japanese that I literally couldn’t get to her! Wall to wall packed.
I waited until we stopped at Yoyogi. The doors opened, and the train cleared out some. The next stop was less than two minutes away.
Now or never.
Her back was to me. I moved closer.
“Excuse me, do you speak English?” I said, trying to get her attention from behind.
She didn’t turn around, didn’t acknowledge me.
Damn it. I almost gave up.
But then I thought – fuck this rude little bitch. I’m gonna make her answer me. I tapped her hard on the shoulder.
She turned around. Pulled headphones out of her ears. Her hair was so long and thick that I hadn’t seen the ear buds.
I repeated my question, and she answered in heavily accented but competent English.
She was a Russian living in Tokyo. A pretty young brunette with big brown eyes and clear skin, her perfect pearly teeth a rarity in Japan. She was taller than me in her heels and her body was slender and tight. She was actually on her way to a dance class.
I asked her if she knew where to find Isetan, and we chatted for just a few seconds.
I was running out of time. The Shinjuku stop was just minutes away. So I pitched a date:
“Let’s meet for drinks tonight.” I said.
We reached the next stop, got off the train, and exchanged emails on the platform.
She was late for her class now, and quickly said goodbye.
The whole interaction was less than three minutes, tops.
After a solo lunch in the Golden Gai, and an afternoon of Shinjuku day game, I headed back to my flat.
I was leaving Japan in less than three days. I didn’t have the luxury of playing aloof, running normal text game, and waiting to contact the Russian.
So I sent her a message just a few hours after we’d met on the train:
MF: Come meet me for a drink in Harajuku tonight…. ;)
Russian: Hi!!! I don’t know yet,if i can,but what time?
MF: Ok, let’s meet at the Harajuku Tap Room at 9 tonight :)
Russian: Ok! But don’t expect… I don’t know
Russian: I can meet u))) but ill go home at 11 I can’t speak English well,is it ok?:D
MF: No problem, see you then. :)
Russian: Where is the tap room?
MF: it’s very close to harajuku station…walk down Takeshita-dori, then take the first left. It’s at the end of the alley on the right
Russian: OK, thanks
Russian: ill get there at 21:05
Russian: I got here where r u?
Two minutes later I met her in the alley across from the Harajuku Tap Room…
